Buangkok

I remember laughing uproariously once, when an acquaintance told me where she stayed. Its the name, see, like Bangkok but with more local flavour.

Anyway. Kampong Lorong Buangkok. So we're going to lose our last kampong. I haven't been there, never seen a real kampong. And I thoroughly enjoy my house with all its modern amenities. Still.. theres something sad about that, isn't it?

But sentiment has no place in our Singapore, of course.

Maybe.. life could be simpler, I think.

JD and Joanne in Perth!

Day 1:

Touchdown. Uncle Gary picked us up and brought us to his home. Many changes since I was last here. The aviary is doing great, birds are beautiful and noisy as heck. The garden is amazing, lemon tree with boughs full of fruit, huge zucchini, a massive rosemary bush, rows of beets, and the most amazing garlic in the world! Its totally Jamie at Home, I swear. And the garlic is incredible! I'm totally going to bring a bunch home. Had a brilliant aussie BBQ for dinner: Lamb rump steaks marinated with JD's spicy rub (sounds wrong) and rosemary fresh from the garden, herb and garlic sausages from Woolies, grilled eggplant (from the garden), fried onions, and salad. Amazing. Too bad Joanne was feeling a little ill from too much vino too early in the day!

Day 2:

Uncle Gary's van that I was supposed to use broke down =( So we'll be relying on pedal power for the next couple of days. Bought a 2nd hand mountain bike for 65 bucks and a helmet for 17 from pawnshops. Pedaled around a lot. We got really tired and bumsore.. haha. The ride was really enjoyable otherwise though, cool and fresh air and lovely scenery. Shopped around at Rockingham shopping centre, Joanne cooked a brilliant spicy aglio olio for dinner (with the world's best organic garlic), and yummy chipolata sausages. Mmm! Then, repaired the bike a little and prepared for the fishing trip the next day!

Day 3:

Woke up early, pedalled really far to Point Peron, climbed across the crumbling precipitous rocks, and started fishing. Total tally at the end of the morning: 3 herring, 1 buff bream, 3 rock cods (2 were babies, released), 1 garfish, 10 blowfish (left to perish on the rocks). Not a brilliant day but not too bad either! Joanne hated the ride and climb though cos it was tiring. Haha.

Scent of flowers wafting

One of my main complaints of dental school, is that it saps up so much time+energy+concentration+life-force, just to avoid being sucked under the waves. What we learn is not extremely challenging nor extremely engaging, just that it all comes in a veritable torrent. From week 1 to week 9 of each term its a struggle to stay afloat in a flood of academic, clinical and patient demands.

Which only makes me appreciate holidays that much more! =)

"See the wretch, that long has tost
On the thorny bed of pain,
At length repair his vigour lost,
And breathe, and walk again:
The meanest flow'ret of the vale,
The simplest note that swells the gale,
The common sun, the air, the skies,
To him are opening Paradise."
- from "Ode On The Pleasure Arising From Vicissitude " by Thomas Gray

This holidays, I went for a short vacation to KL and Penang with Joanne, Wyelynn and Yi Lin. It was a pretty good trip =) While it didn't -really- feel like travelling because, lets face it, Malaysia isn't that far different from Singapore, it was nice to just hang out the whole day without a single serious thought crossing my mind. Not to mention having food glorious food as the sole aim of each day. And the girls are good travel buddies too! But next time, somewhere further alright? Haha. And I feel so blessed to have Joanne by my side. The trip was to a large part her idea, as was the itinerary. Its good to have a capable, intelligent girlfriend thats cute to boot =) Think this is our 4th trip together overseas (excluding Johor), and its always the best. Love you, dear!

So its just 3 more days to school, now. The final stretch, the end is in sight (the Chariots of Fire theme is running through my head now, no kidding). Most of my lady friends are already working, and finally us men will be joining them. Its about damn time! Though I do wonder how things will change when work starts, how my life, my habits, my worldview will differ... Not much, I suspect. Haha. Well, all the best to those of you looking for jobs now, and to the fortunate ones who've already had good offers, my heartfelt congratulations.

24th Birthday

Had a nice quiet muted birthday celebration with lots of food at imperial treasure cilantro hanabi sucklingpigroastduckathome. Maybe I'm outgrowing the big parties, haha. But life is good when you get to pig out and then chill out =)

Many thanks goes out to: my darling girlfriend, my family, uncle Peter and auntie Faith, Lewis, Yilin, Wyelynn, Tony, Jinming, Kevin, Louis, Emilia, Lester, Ben, Dephne, Yee Leng, Aaron, Estee and Eileen for the (on-time) birthday wishes. And thanks to all for the belated ones too!

I promise to throw a bash after I get all my work out of the way. Haha. If not, theres always next year! Cheers!
